Tradition in Hawaiian culture is the basis for the fabric of society in the islands. Through time many aspects have transformed through the influence of contemporary lifestyles.
The traditional opelu fishery and the importance of net-making is in grave danger of being lost forever since only a few kupuna are left to spread this knowledge on to the next generation.
The time is now to preserve and cultivate this practice, to ensure that future generations continue the practice.
